About the Artist

I am Melisa, a passionate artist hailing from Metepec, Mexico. I draw my inspiration from my natural surroundings, exploring the local flora and fauna, and incorporating these elements into my work. My journey in art began at age of six, evolving into a professional career spanning over two decades. With a degree in graphic design, my expertise extends beyond painting to include color theory, composition, and surface print design. My professional experience also includes editorial design, illustration, brand design and interior design.

My experience as an educator dates back to 2006, encompassing language instruction, art education, and art therapy. I've had the privilege of contributing to painting-as-therapy projects in both Mexico and the United States.

Beyond teaching, my design firm, Aquetzalli, delivers full-stack design consulting and solutions. At Aquetzalli, we collaborate with a diverse team of designers, architects, engineers, and entrepreneurs, providing comprehensive design consulting services as well as servicing design licenses, globally.

FAQ

How should I decide between taking a beginner or intermediate course?

Great question!

Below is a list of our suggested prerequisites for taking an intermediate course; if you don't feel you have these skills, we suggest you select the introductory/beginner course where you will learn these foundational skills.

For intermediate you should have an understanding of the following fundamental skills:

  • Experience and comfort manipulating water on paper: for example, pigment applications such as “dry on dry,” “dry on wet,” and “wet on wet”.
  • Experience creating different textures and volume through brush work; techniques such as “sweeping,” pressure application, layering, and texturizing (for example, applying layering and texturizing techniques for a floral composition).
  • Pallet composition: you should have a foundational understanding of color theory, including selecting, mixing and creating colors for a given composition.

For more information about what each course offers, click into the "learn more" for the respective course where you will find an in depth description of the course objectives, what you will learn, and a high level overview of the syllabus for the course.

What should I keep in mind when registering for a course?

Great question!

A few important things to pay attention to:

1. level (beginner or intermediate, for example)

2. language (Spanish or English)

3. calendar: specifically, the course start date, the day of the week the class is on, the class time of day.

You will see options for beginner, intermediate and/or personal 1:1 courses in both English and Spanish. Be sure you select the appropriate level and language for your course.

When you enroll in a course, note that each class in the course occur on the same day at the scheduled time for 4 consecutive weeks.

It is up to you to show up to the online course. We will not refund classes that you miss.

We will, however, record those classes and make those recordings available to those who have registered for the class. If for some reason you have to miss one of the classes, we will make the recording available to you as we do with the rest of the students.

How do I enroll in a course?

1. Take a look at the courses we offer above to see which of our courses are open for enrollment: we offer beginner, intermediate and/or personal Watercolor painting courses in Spanish and English at different times of the year.

2. Select the appropriate course or 1:1 session given your language and level; you will be prompted to pay for the course. Be sure to check the course dates and times before purchasing.

If, for example, you want to enroll in the beginner course in English that is available, make sure that you note the start date and time of the course. Every course consists of four classes that will happen at the same time on the same day for four consecutive weeks.

3. Purchase the course; upon purchase, you'll receive a confirmation email and a message from us with additional information so that you can easily join over zoom to participate in the weekly classes once the course begins.

Because of demand and how we organize courses, we are unable to allow course participants to change the start or attending dates for the course they select once they have purchased the course.

Why don't I see a particular course that you offer right now?

Course availability changes seasonally as we roll out different offerings or as we improve our courses.

If you'd like to be kept up-to-date on when we make the next round of a given course available, sign up for our newsletter. Otherwise, the course selection you see on this page is what is currently open for enrollment; the courses listed will clearly show the start and end dates of the course, as well as the time and day on which they will occur.

Melisa offers 3 different course offerings: beginner, intermediate and 1:1 personal courses. These courses are offered in both English and Spanish at different times.

Currently, each course consists of four 90-minute classes; each class happens once per week over the course of four weeks. The class day and time for a given course will always be the same.

Class times appear in Central Time (Standard or Daylight, as relevant).

Why can't I register for a course that I see?

Our courses fill up quickly. We cap students per course at 12 students intentionally to ensure that our online classroom supports a personalized, healthy learning environment with the space for students to ask questions, build rapport and trust with each other, and receive the support and guidance from Melisa that we value providing in this experience.

If you are trying to purchase/register for a course and you see that it is sold out, it is because we've capped the size of the class and the class is at capacity of students- and so buying/registering has been disabled.

We have sometimes opened a second concurrent course offering when demand has been high, so be sure to email us if you are interested in a course but the course has already filled up.

If you are interested in taking one of our courses but don't see it as available, or see that has sold out, by all means, reach out to us and let us know you are interested so that we can be sure to let you know when the same course will be offered again.

Are personal classes 1:1?

Yes, 1:1 Classes are between you and Melisa over video. You will have her all to yourself.

For 1:1 classes we generally have an introductory call so that you and Melisa can talk about what your goals are for the 1:1 sessions, what areas you'd like to improve, and to level-set expectations. We have found that this is the best approach for both.

Unlike the group classes which are structured with a curriculum given the skill level of the class, individual classes are opportunities for you to decide what areas you want to work on. Melisa will curate each session individually based on what you want to work on during that session.

What happens if I have to cancel my course registration?

We do not reimburse course purchase cancellations for any reason. The reason for this is because we put a lot of work into curating a curriculum and class size that is optimal for our students.

This is one of the reasons we are very clear about what the course structure, what time commitments you will have, and what you will learn.

As we mentioned, if for some reason you are unable to attend one or more sessions for the course you booked, we make the class recordings available to the registrants for that course for the dates that they were not able to attend. In extreme cases, we are accommodating; but our policy is based on previous experience and so we make this clear for a reason.
